Michigan football is laser focused on 5-star recruits in 2028 class

Despite dealing with less-than-ideal circumstances, Kyle Whittingham has put together a solid recruiting class in his first go-around as Michigan football head coach.

The 2027 class is ranked 11th in the 247 Sports composite rankings. The Wolverines have 15 blue-chip prospects. There could be more high-end talent. Michigan is also trying to flip five-star Dakota Guerrant, the top recruit in the state of Michigan in the 2027 class, but for the most part, attention has shifted to the 2028 class.

The 2028 class will be a better example of Whittingham having the full time to recruit a class, even though that still won't be completely true.

If there was a complaint about 2027, it's the lack of five-star talent. Whittigham seems determined to rectify that, and the Wolverines are making strides to ensure it happens.

Michigan football making progress with two five-star recruits

The Wolverines aren't giving up their effort to flip Georgia five-star quarterback commitment, Jayden Wade. It's a top priority, according to Ethan McDowell of The Wolverine.

Bryce Underwood having a breakout season under the new coaching staff could certainly help the Wolverines in their effort to flip the five-star QB, who is 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, and ranked No. 8 overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Flipping him from Georgia won't be easy. A strong campaign by the offense will help.

Getting Wade on campus for a visit would help the cause, too. That's something that the Wolverines have been able to lock in with five-star offensive tackle Antijuan Wilkes Jr.

The in-state tackle is ranked as the No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2028 class (Rivals). The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder ranked No. 1 among offensive tackles, also via the 247 Sports composite rankings (13th overall), is coming to Ann Arbor for a Gameday visit.

This another report from McDowell, who has the Detroit Cass Tech prospect coming to watch Whittingham's team in the 2026 season. It feels like the Wolverines are among the top contenders for the five-star tackle, and this is another sign of that.

It also feels like Michigan football is better positioned to land some of the top in-state recruits in the 2028 class, although getting five-star QB Donald Tabron will be an uphill battle, hence the focus on Wade.

Wilkes has visited Michigan four times already, including twice this spring. He also visited Michigan State and Ohio State this spring. Those could be two of the top contenders for his commitment.

Jim Harding, who just had two offensive tackles drafted in the first round, could also have a key role to play, but Wilkes and Wade are easily among the top targets for Michigan fans to know in 2028.
