Early Signing Day proved to be eventful for Michigan football, but not just because of what happened on the recruiting trail.
Three days after the loss to Ohio State and another poor performance from the special teams, the Wolverines made a move on Wednesday as head coach Sherrone Moore announced that the program was moving on from JB Brown after two seasons, via Pete Nakos of On3.com.
It's true that the special teams just weren't good enough. Dominic Zvada struggled this season. Semaj Morgan was a disaster as a return specialist, and things just never seemed sharp. Michigan football was rated in the K-Ford special teams rankings outside the top 100.
Michigan football needs to make more staff changes
That's not going to help this program get over the hump against Ohio State. Earlier this week, we said that Brown needed to go. It's not joyful to call for someone to get fired, but it's not show friends, it's show business.
if Sherrone Moore didn't fire Brown, he could be next. It's up to the head coach to make sure that every facet of the team is operating at a high level. That wasn't the case this season. Yes, it was a young team, but the excuses need to stop. The standard should be the standard.
In 2025, it wasn't good enough. One area where it wasn't good enough was on defense. Wink Martindale has to go. Hire Mark Stoops. Go back to the Harbaugh tree, but Wink isn't made for college. He struggled in the three biggest games of the season.
Indeed, the defensive line didn't play well, and Michigan did allow just 27 points against OSU. It just feels like some new energy is needed. A quarterbacks coach, in addition to Chip Lindsey, who is also the offensive coordinator, wouldn't be a bad thing.
Sherrone Moore needs to be less involved in the offense. Maybe adding another voice with an expertise in throwing the ball will help open things up. Firing Brown was the right call.
It was the first move, but shouldn't be the last.
