Michigan basketball is basking in the glow of its first Final Four appearance since the 2018 season, since John Belein left for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Michigan came close to getting back under Juwan Howard. As ugly as it got when it ended, Howard took the Wolverines to the Sweet 16 twice, and led them to a Big Ten championship.
That shouldn't be forgotten. It also shouldn't be forgotten how far May has taken this program in two years. From eight wins to the Final Four.
May's first season as Michigan basketball head coach went so well it feels like people how forget how bad the Wolverines were before he took over.
That's also a reason that Michigan should do everything it can to keep May in Ann Arbor for as long as possible, which seems to be exactly what AD Warde Manuel is doing.
North Carolina, which just fired Hubert Davis, has been sniffing around. You can't blame the Tar Heels. Dusty May is one of the best head coaches in the sport. He's now taken two programs to the Final Four in a span of four years.
Dusty, Michigan close to contract extension
According to Josh Henschke of the Maize and Blue Review, reports that May's representatives have been talking to Michigan about a new contract, and a deal is close to being done.
"We're told that Dusty May's reps and Warde Manuel have been discussing a new deal for weeks, before the BTT, and talks are trending positively toward a new deal," Henschke wrote on X. "What we're hearing as there's hope something can be announced, 'as soon as possible.'"
Getting a deal announced with May before the Final Four would be great. Either way, it feels like it's going to happen soon enough. The focus and the goal are clear: win two more games.
