So much attention has been on wrapping up the 2027 recruiting, and for Michigan, its biggest official visit weekend is just days away. Because of that, not as much attention has been given to the 2028 recruiting class, well, until this week.

So far this week, Michigan has hosted the No. 1 running back in the 2028 class, the No. 1 defensive lineman, and a Top 100 quarterback. Visits from running back Kevin Hartsfield and defensive lineman Tyzon Swann were very positive, and Swann has already put Michigan as a contender for his recruitment.

"I knew I’d be wow’d by it, but I didn’t expect to be so wow’d," Swann told Rivals.

Without a single 2028 commitment and with coaches officially able to contact recruits as of June 15, Michigan needs to get going in this cycle. Granted, head coach Kyle Whittingham has to make an impact during Victor Weekend to really wrap up the 2027 cycle, but these visits, especially from Swann, are proof that Michigan is turning heads to 2028.

Michigan is now a big contender for 5-star DL Tyzon Swann's recruitment

Once Whittingham handles business with the 2027 cycle, there is no doubt that his attention will turn to 2028 prospects. Honestly, the Michigan head coach has already started looking to the future, not just with 2028, but also handing out offers like they are candy to 2029 prospects as well.

Whittingham doesn't have a five-star recruit in his 2027 class, so the fact that he is already high on the list for Swann and his recruitment is a huge step forward in Whittingham's first recruiting cycle. Even though Michigan doesn't have a five-star recruit, the class is still very strong, ranked No. 22 by 247Sports Team Recruiting Rankings.

While Swann has already stated that Michigan is quickly a contender in his recruitment, the Wolverines will have a battle on their hands for his commitment. Other big programs, even Big Ten programs like Penn State, Maryland, and Ohio State, are after Swann as well.

The Buckeyes are also an early favorite to land Swann's commitment, even though there is no indication he plans on making one anytime soon. As soon as programs were able to begin contacting 2028 recruits, Swann quickly heard from the Buckeyes, a school he said he was hoping and waiting to hear from.

This could go down as another amazing rivalry battle between Michigan and Ohio State, as both programs will no doubt roll out the red carpet for Swann. Don't count out Penn State and Maryland, though, especially with Swann hailing from Maryland. There are also a few SEC schools in the mix, with Florida and Auburn already throwing their hats in the ring.

The visit went better than expected for Swann, and now it will come down to how Michigan stands out above the other interested programs for Swann.
