The 2027 recruiting cycle will begin to wrap up in the next month, even with a few players still uncommitted. Attention for every college football program is beginning to turn more towards the 2028 class, working to get early commitments and maybe even thinking a little about the Class of 2029 as well.
Well, Michigan is turning its attention to the Class of 2029 already, as Kyle Whittingham and the staff have welcomed wide receiver Eric Whitfield Jr. for a visit on Monday. The IMG Academy product doesn't even have a recruiting rating, and those won't come out for the Class of 2029 until later this year, as these players haven't even completed their sophomore seasons.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pounder could possibly be the No. 1 overall player in his cycle. ELITE talent. https://t.co/chXfd0CAmc https://t.co/6oipbXeufg
The visit from Whitfield comes as a big surprise, not just because Michigan hasn't even wrapped up the 2027 cycle, but the Wolverines also don't even have a single 2028 commit yet. This is not completely out of the ordinary, but some would think there would be more concern over 2028 recruits right now than over 2029 recruits.
Kyle Whittingham is putting the cart before the horse with 2029 WR Eric Whitfield Jr's visit
There are a couple of ways for Michigan fans to look at this visit for the Wolverines. First, fans can be excited that Whittingham is thinking so far into the future as to already be recruiting 2029 prospects. Second is that fans are probably wondering why Michigan is thinking about 2029 recruits right now when the Wolverines don't even have any 2028 recruits.
It is odd that Michigan would have such a young visitor on campus so early in his recruitment. Again, Whitfield has yet to even play his sophomore season, but that hasn't stopped schools from extending offers. With Whitfield taking a visit to Ann Arbor, of course, the Wolverines extended an offer, but they aren't the only big program to do so.
Whitfield has received offers from some larger programs, like in-state Florida, as well as Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, Colorado, and a few others. It seems there could be more coming, especially as Whitfield continues to compete on the field in the coming seasons.
This by no means is an official visit for Whitfield at Michigan, as his social media post simply said he would be at Michigan on Monday. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound wide receiver still has a lot to show the more he plays in high school, but clearly, he is already turning a few heads.
Michigan is showing a dedication to looking to the future with this visit, but maybe spending a little more time on the class of 2028 would be a better use of time right now. It should also be noted that even though the 2027 cycle is winding down, Michigan has yet to host its biggest recruiting weekend, Victor Weekend, so attention could easily be put towards that as well.
