The Michigan football spring game will be held this Saturday. Some of the big names might not be on display, but one emerging name will be and that's Savion Hiter.

The five-star freshman running back has taken Michigan football by storm this spring. It's clear that the top-ranked running back in the 2026 recruiting class, and maybe the best offensive player in the class, is going to make an early impact.

Head coach Kyle Whittingham has talked about Hiter numerous times this spring. He mentioned the five-star freshman again on Wednesday, and he couldn't help but gush like he's done all spring.

“A 6-foot ball of muscle,” Whittingham said of Hiter. "He's tough, has great contact balance, a smart, smart young man who does a good job with pass protection. He’s still got some technique things to iron out, but he’s not afraid. He sticks his nose right in there and has great hands. He's the whole package.”

Savion Hiter is the total package

If you put on the highlights of Hiter from high school, it doesn't take a scouting expert to see the kid has freakish talent. He's got a combination of size and speed you just don't see often.

The Virginia prospect looks exactly what a first-round running back should look like. He can catch, he's explosive, and according to Whittingham, he's really good in pass protection.

For most freshman running backs, that's the missing piece. Poor pass protection is what usually keeps them off the field. Whittingham has praised Hiter multiple times for his pass protection, which is the biggest sign yet that the five-star freshman will have a big role to play in the 2026 season.

And if Michigan football fans needed a reason to watch the spring game on Saturday, Hiter is it. The kid is going to be special, and special right away.
