Kyle Whittingham adds another dynamic assistant coach to Michigan staff

The transfer portal is the biggest focus of Michigan football fans, and fans of college football fans everywhere, rightfully so.

But the Wolverines' new head coach, Kyle Whittingham, has also been busy assembling a coaching staff for Michigan football, one that seems much more talented than the one that was in place last season

Every coach under Whittingham has a proven track record of some sort. Many of them have track records of players earning all-conference honors or getting drafted.

Yet, Whittingham has also hired some up-and-comers, such as Koy Detmer Jr. Another dynamic assistant coach was hired on Sunday, as Whittingham has landed Tyler Stockon, a three-time Broyles award finalist, to coach the Michigan football safeties.

Stockton was the co-defensive coordinator for Boise State for the past two seasons. Before coaching at Boise State, Stockton was the defensive coordinator at Ball State, where he was nominated for the Broyles Award in 2020, 2022, and 2023 (via On3).

Not only does Stockton bring another bright defensive mind to the coaching staff, but he will also add to the Midwest recruiting presence, assuming he's one of the 10 assistants who will be able to go out on the road and recruit.

We don't know who that will be at this point. Whittingham hired his son, Alex Whittingham, as the linebackers coach. His brother, Freddie Whittingham, could be one of those who doesn't recruit. He has been the director of recruiting before and could take on that role again, in addition to coaching tight ends.

Detmer Jr. is another who served as an analyst/QB coach. All that means is that he can't recruit, but developing the quarterbacks seems more important. Either way, Stockton is another exciting addition to what appears to be an elite coaching staff.
