It's time for Michigan fans to temper their expectations with QB Bryce Underwood

Bryce Underwood certainly has talent, which was never out of the question, but there is no reason to set incredibly high expectations right now.

Michigan fans gathered around in the Big House on Saturday to watch the Wolverines show what they have worked on this offseason in spring practices. However, it felt more like fans gathered in order to see what new young 5-star quarterback Bryce Underwood had to offer.

While Underwood had a moderately good day, some fans are ready for him to be named the starter, while others felt the young gunslinger left more to be desired. Underwood has only been with the program for a few months, so Michigan fans may want to start tempering their expectations now because everyone takes time to develop in college.

Bryce Underwood's talent is obvious, but ultimately, he just needs to get the job done

There is no denying Underwood's talent on the football field; it is clearly there, but fans may be going a bit overboard. Some fans believe Underwood should already be given the Heisman Trophy for the next season.

However, it should be known that Michigan didn't call complex play calls in the spring game, and Underwood had a stat line of 12-for-26 for 187 yards, one passing touchdown, one interception, and three sacks. It is the most amazing stat line, but for a spring game, it certainly down its job. The built of the yards came on the 88-yard TD pass to tight end Jalen Hoffman at the end of the game.

On3's Andy Staples is basically telling Michigan fans that Underwood doesn't even need to be a Heisman caliber quarterback next season, he simply needs to be better than what the Wolverines had last season.

Michigan's quarterback Davis Warren last season threw for 1,199 yards and seven touchdowns, along with nine interceptions. Warren only averaged 5.7 yards per pass and had a 64.1 completion rate. Underwood simply has to play better than that next season and just continue to grow as a player in his first season.

If Underwood is named the starter, he doesn't need to have the weight of winning a Heisman Trophy on his back in his first season; he simply needs to go out and help Michigan win games. Fans need to stop putting the pressure on a 17-year-old who has only been with the program for a few months.

The Wolverines have a veteran in the locker room who confirmed today he will be good to go by the start of the 2025 season. Fresno State and UCF transfer Mikey Keene is entering his fifth season in college football and can certainly get Michigan started at the beginning of the season to ease Underwood into the role.
