After watching the Michigan football spring game on Saturday, it was easy to see that the Wolverines need a veteran quarterback for the 2025 season.
The good news is that player is already on the roster.
Mikey Keene signed with Michigan football during the winter transfer portal window. The former Fresno State quarterback who started against Michigan last season, signed with the Wolverines and was expected to compete with Bryce Underwood for the starting job.
However, Keene wasn't able to participate in spring practices. His absence was felt on Saturday as Jadyn Davis struggled. Underwood had some ups and downs. Yet, Davis threw two interceptions and quashed the idea that he could be the No. 2 this season.
Michigan was showing interest in Brendan Sullivan, the former Iowa quarterback, as a possible backup to Underwood. However, Sherrone Moore, the Michigan football head coach, said that Keene would be healthy for the fall on Saturday.
Keene confirmed that on Monday. He told reporters that there is "no doubt" he will be healthy for fall camp to compete at the quarterback position.

"If it's me, if it's Bryce, if it's Jadyn, if it's Davis, we're all in this together to ultimately play the most beneficial role that we can to helping this team win." — @Mikey_Keenehttps://t.co/QuwSZhnvjK
"If it's me, if it's Bryce, if it's Jadyn, if it's Davis, we're all in this together to ultimately play the most beneficial role that we can to helping this team win," Keene said to Alejandro Zuniga of 247 Sports.
Keene has thrown for 8,245 yards during his career. He's got 65 touchdown passes compared to 28 interceptions. During the past two seasons, he has thrown 42 touchdowns compared to 21 interceptions for Fresno State. Keene completed 67.1 percent of his passes in 2023 and 70.5 in the 2024 season.
If Keene is healthy, the Michigan football depth chart should be fine at quarterback. So I wouldn't expect a transfer portal quarterback, unless there is more concern than meets the eye with Keene.
