He hasn't had a ton of help but Bryce Underwood is underperforming to an extreme

After being propped up as one of the best freshmen in the country, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood has been on the slump of a lifetime.

After the Michigan Wolverines lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes in The Game, people started to take an in-depth look at what was wrong with the team that had just gone on a five-game winning streak.

One glaring issue was the output by freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood. While he certainly hasn't been helped by the injuries and consequent absences of star running backs Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall.

However, his numbers, especially over the final five-game stretch to close out the regular season, have been undeniably deplorable, and he has been a far, far cry from the star player he was supposed to be this year.

Bryce Underwood is flopping at the worst time

Against the Michigan State Spartans, Purdue Boilermakers, Northwestern Wildcats, Maryland Terrapins, and Ohio State Buckeyes, Underwood had an abysmal four total touchdowns.

Yes, you read that correctly: over the last five games, Underwood has had just two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns, with only one TD on the ground (alongside an interception) against the Buckeyes in the most important game of his young career.

Over the 12-game regular season, Michigan's passing offense ranked 100th in the country, with fewer than 200 yards through the air per game.

Bryce Underwood 2025 regular season stats

  • 2,229 passing yards
  • 9 passing touchdowns
  • 6 interceptions
  • 17 sacks
  • 323 rushing yards
  • 5 rushing touchdowns

Sure, Underwood's numbers on the ground have been generally better than his numbers through the air, and yes, the Wolverines have had a run-focused offense all season. However, earning just 14 total touchdowns (nine passing, five rushing) and throwing six interceptions isn't acceptable.

As Michigan and Underwood prepare for the offseason, head coach Sherrone Moore has to figure out how to better support his young quarterback in the last game of the year, or he may need to start looking else for a new gunslinger in the backfield.
