One of the big questions about the new Michigan football coaching staff is how it would do on the recruiting trail.
So far, the results have been good. The Wolverines did a stellar job of recruiting players out of the transfer portal. The Wolverines recruited some key players away from Utah, while filling some key needs along the way.
Kyle Whittingham and company were able to hold the 2026 class together, too, for the most part. Those were all positive signs moving forward.
Now, that the focus has shifted to the 2027 recruiting class, the Wolverines have started to set their board and establish some top targets.
Michigan football making headway with top in-state target
One of those is an in-state recruit Dakota Guerrant, the top-ranked player in the state of Michigan for the 2027 class.
Guerrant is out of Harper Woods. He's 6-foot-1, 193 pounds, and is ranked 49th overall, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Guerrant is the top-ranked prospect in the state of Michigan for the 2027 class and the No. 8 wide receiver.
Michigan has started to land some talented receivers in the last two classes. Salesi Moa was a top-100 recruit in 2026. Travis Johnson was ranked 124th overall, while Andrew Marsh was another top-100 prospect coming out of high school.
You also have former top-100 wideout Jaime Ffrench and JJ Buchanan, one of the top wideouts available in the transfer portal. That should improve the pass offense, which could help the Wolverines land Guerrant.
Wide receivers coach Micah Simon met with Guerrant twice in January, according to Ethan McDowell of The Wolverine. He's also planning a spring visit to Michigan football.
The Wolverines still have plenty of work to do, and there is no shortage of competition, but at the very least, it feels like the Wolverines are gaining some traction.
