Michigan basketball is fresh off winning the national championship, but in no way do the Wolverines seem satisfied.

Dusty May isn't at least. The Michigan head coach has talked numerous times this offseason about how big a priority it is for the program to reach the Final Four, especially with it being hosted in Detroit in 2027.

May was at a speaking event with Jalen Rose and Tom Izzo. There were some playful jabs between Izzo and Rose, but the conversation turned to the 2027 Final Four in Detroit.

May didn't back down from the expecation.

“The floor up on the wall is a nice touch to the practice facility,” May said via On3. “We look forward to adding another banner in Crisler with Jalen and the guys on it sooner than later. But to add one that says ‘Detroit’ in our facility, in our arena would be even more special.”

Michigan basketball aims to hang more banners next season

Not only did May talk about the Wolverines earning another banner, but he mentioned hanging a banner that recognizes what the Fab Five did, after those Final Four banner were taken down.

If May's team is going to earn a trip back to to the Final Four, the Wolverines will have to deal with Izzo's squad. The Spartans will be motivated, especially Izzo to win a national even more after May did it in his second season with Michigan.

Jeremy Fears is coming back, which will make it more challenging. The Wolverines should have some interesting battles with the Spartans this season, especially Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney.

Those should be fun matchups. Both teams are expected to be Final Four contenders. Now that the NBA draft has been finalized, we'll get a better idea if Michigan is going to try to add to its roster.

Even without another addition, May signed the No. 4 recruiting class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. The Wolverines have the No. 11 transfer portal class, which is headlined by Moustapha Thiam and J.P. Estrella. Jalen Davis is a sleeper, too.

Two highly-ranked freshmen should play big roles next season, just like McKenney did in 2025-26 for Michigan. But the continued development of McKenney. Cadeau, Thiam, and Estrella, along with the contributions of Quinn Costello and Brandon McCoy will likely determine just how far the Wolverines can go in 2026-27.

Right now, Detroit seems realistic.
