The 2027 recruiting cycle is beginning to come to a close with official visits done and the last few big names yet to make commitments. The month of June has not been as successful for new Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham as May was, especially with Victors Weekend, but there are still a few irons the Wolverines have in the fire.
As Whittingham waits to hear from a few recruits who have Michigan in their top choices, another prospect has announced a commitment date. Four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert Jr. has announced he will pick between Indiana, Ohio State, and Michigan on Wednesday, July 1, at 5:00 p.m. ET on the CBS Sports College Football YouTube Channel.

Even though the defending National Champions, Indiana, are in the mix, this really is a race between two of the fiercest rivals in college football. According to the five insider predictions on the On 3 Prediction Machine, three are in favor of Torbert choosing the Buckeyes, while two are in favor of the Wolverines.
This feels like a tight race, and normally, when a commit is getting ready to announce his decision, it is pretty evident who he is going with. With Torbert, that isn't the case. This commitment could go either way, and if Michigan were to win it, it could give Whittingham some early bragging rights over Ohio State head coach Ryan Day as well as defending champs, Indiana.
Whittingham has the chance to steal an Ohio native right out from under the Buckeyes. Torbert could also really boost a Michigan recruiting class that needs some help in the rankings, coming in as the No. 70 player in the 2027 class, No. 10 cornerback, and No. 3 player in the state of Ohio, according to Rivals.
Kyle Whittingham could get a win over Ohio State before the football season even begins
The biggest thing Michigan fans are going to want to know about Whittingham's first season with the Wolverines is whether or not he will be able to take down Ohio State or not. The biggest game of the season is undoubtedly The Game, which takes place the final weekend of the regular season at Noon and Whittingham will have the task of going to the Horseshoe for his first showdown.
Whittingham has the chance to get a feel for what a win over Ryan Day would feel like, this one coming on the recruiting trail. The recruitment of Torbert has been a long one, but Michigan could shut the door on the Buckeyes once and for all.
An early win over Ohio State, even if it's on the recruiting trail, could set the tone for what it will be like with Whittingham at the helm at Michigan. It would be big for the Wolverines, and something Whittingham needs after a slow June when it comes to recruiting.
Michigan fans will be watching a lot of announcement videos on Wednesday with more than one Michigan prospect making their commitments on July 1. It could be a busy day for Whittingham, or a depressing one, depending on which way these recruits choose to go.
