Michigan football coordinators met with the media on Monday ahead of spring ball which starts this week and Bryce Underwood was a hot topic of conversation.
Chip Lindsey, the first-year offensive coordinator for Michigan football, said that Underwood is "advanced physically" and also, "Definitely a guy we are excited about with our future. So far, I love his approach. He's all business."
Underwood is 6-foot-4 and around 220 pounds. He can sling the ball with the best of them but can also run which is why he has drawn comparisons to Vince Young and Cam Newton.
However, as a true freshman, he'll have plenty to prove if he wants to beat out Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene. Keene has passed for over 6,000 yards in his college career and Lindsey said of Keene on Monday, "I just thought he was a perfect fit for what we were looking for."
You can interpret that a lot of different ways. I believe it means that Keene will mentor Bryce Underwood. Keene surely wants to play and start. But if there is time-share situation, certain packages for Bryce or what have you, the presence of Keene should aid in his development.
Keene also gives Michigan football another plan if Underwood isn't quite ready. We'll see but this spring should tell us a lot. The Wolverines don't have many practices open to the media, but word gets around how things are going, plus U-M will hold a sping game.
Jadyn Davis, a four-star recruit, is the forgotten man. But Sherrone Moore said all of the quarterbacks will get equal reps. I doubt that anyone will be named the starter coming out of spring, but the performance of Underwood this spring could go a long way toward deciding if the five-star freshman is ready to be the full-time starting quarterback or not.
