Barstool's Dave Portnoy tells Michigan football fans: 'I'm working on it'
Dave Portnoy, the founder and CEO of Barstool Sports is a huge Michigan football fan. You probably enjoyed some of his content as the Wolverines won the national championship last season.
This season, though, it has been a much different story for Michigan football. Saturday against Illinois was the latest example as the Fighting Illini notched a 21-7 win.
The offense was ugly. Michigan football turned it over three times. Jack Tuttle, the third starting quarterback for the Wolverines this season, turned it over twice. He also missed Colston Loveland on a wide-open pass in the first quarter.
It might have gone for a touchdown. At the very least, it would have been a big gain. It wasn't a hard throw either. Tuttle just isn't a Big-Ten caliber quarterback.
It doesn't feel like there is one on the roster, at least not one ready to play right now, although if Jadyn Davis can't get on the field this season, it makes me worried about his future too.
Portnoy recognizes, like most observers of Michigan football that the quarterback position is a huge issue. It's the No. 1 issue and Portnoy has pledged to spend up to $3 million in NIL money to attract a quality quarterback next season.
Portnoy reiterated that after the loss on Saturday, posting on X: "To all Michigan fans. I'm working on it."
I assume that means trying to get a quarterback for next season. There have been rumors about Michigan trying to flip five-star Bryce Underwood in the 2025 class, but those are hard to believe, especially since Underwood reacted with a laughing emoji when the topic was discussed on a podcast recently.
Regardless, Michigan will need money for a quarterback in the portal, plus all the help that will be needed on the offensive line, defensive line, EDGE, and wide receiver.
I don't have much confidence that Portnoy will be able to help much. I hope the school lets him, but even a fancy quarterback won't fix all that ails Michigan football.
