Michigan football has landed one five-star recruit in the 2026 class, is another on the way?

Michigan football currently has a top-10 recruiting class in 2026, but there are still some big fish out there, including five-star running back Savion Hiter.

There isn't a more important target on the board for the Wolverines. Hiter is 5-foot-11, 205 pounds and is the consensus No. 1 running back in the 2026 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings (17th overall) and On3 Industry Rankings (12th). Both have him ranked as a five-star recruit out of Mineral, Virginia.

Last month, Hiter visited Michigan, Tennessee, Ohio State, and Georgia. However, it continues to feel as though the recruitment has come down to Michigan and Tennessee.

Hiter posted on his X account that a decision is coming, but a date hasn't been finalized. One would assume a commitment would happen this month or in August -- sometime before the start of his high school season.

Good vibes for Michigan with Savion Hiter

There aren't any crystal ball predictions or expert projections yet, but Michigan fans have been feeling somewhat confident. Yet, program insider Chris Balas, who doesn't comment a ton on recruiting, posted on X on Monday that he was "liking Michigan's chances" with Hiter.

After missing on Calvin Russell, landing Hiter is essential. The miss on Russell probably opened up some funds in the NIL recruiting budget, so it would make sense for Michigan to throw more resources at Hiter in order to shore up his commitment.

Truth be told, running back is the biggest need in this class. A top-100 wideout would have been nice, but Michigan has landed five pass catchers ranked in the top 200 overall of their respective class in the past two cycles, and three in the top 160 in this class, if you include tight end Matt Ludwig.

Michigan has landed a top-200 player at every position in the past two classes, except running back. So Hiter is a must-get and would be the cherry on top of a superb 2026 recruiting class.
