Michigan football has put together a really solid 2027 recruiting class under first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham.
The Wolverines have 21 commitments total. 15 of them are ranked as blue-chip prospects, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, which have Michigan football ranked 11th in the team rankings.
After a recent rankings update, Michigan doesn't have any top-100 commitments, but there are five players within the top-124, and six in the top-157 committed. It's a strong haul, with blue-chip talent at key positions of need.
Now, the focus has shifted ahead to the 2028 recruiting class. Michigan suffered some in-state recruiting misses in 2027, and is trying to avoid that in 2028.
Tyler Trusel, a three-star athlete out of Bloomfield Hills, who is ranked No. 408 overall nationally, as well as No. 9 in the state of Michigan for the 2028 class, is one name to know.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound athlete, who has 30 scholarship offers, including one from Nebraska recently, will be back on campus for the Oklahoma game, according to Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider.
"I do (plan to visit Michigan for a game)," Trusel said toThe Michigan Insider. "I'll be at the Michigan vs. Oklahoma game. I'm looking forward to seeing what Michigan's offense is really about, seeing the scheme and if they're going to run more or pass more."
Michigan has to alleviate passing game concerns for 2028 recruits
Trusel echoed the sentiments of five-star Dakota Guerrant, who said one reason he couldn't commit to Michigan football this summer was a lack of faith in the offense. He just wasn't sure if it would be a good fit for wide receivers or if it would be a heavy-run-based offense.
Kyle Whittingham has been known for running the ball. Utah ran the ball more in 2025 than it threw it, so the concern is a valid one. However, Michigan isn't throwing in the towel on Guerrant. Opening up the offense this fall is one way to try and flip him.
It sounds like that would also help in the recruitment of Trusel, who is putting together an impressive offer list that includes eight Big Ten programs, highlighted by Indiana. Michigan State is also in the mix.
The wide receiver/defensive back is one of the top players in the state of Michigan for the 2028 class out of Brother Rice. Deandre Bidden is another big name at wide receiver to know.
After missing on Guerrant, Michigan can't afford to miss on Bidden or Trusel, for that matter. It seems like all three recruits could have the same concern, which is one the Wolverines will need to alleviate this fall, if they want to keep those talented pass catchers home, that is.
