Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham brings a new style to Michigan in 2026, but his style of offense may not differ much from what Wolverines fans are used to. Whittingham has always been known to be a run-first offensive coach, and with Michigan's load of running backs, including five-star 2026 recruit Savion Hiter, that may not change much in Ann Arbor. However, with the addition of offensive coordinator Jason Beck, the passing game could take a big step forward.
That style of coaching could be the reason that Michigan missed out big time on in-state wide receiver Dakota Guerrant, who announced his commitment to Oregon Tuesday afternoon. The commitment came as a huge surprise, with Guerrant set to visit Ann Arbor this weekend for Victor Weekend. The news of Guerrant announcing his commitment actually came about 20 minutes before he appeared on The Pat McAfee Show.
Guerrant hails from just an hour outside of Ann Arbor, so this is a bigger cut than most in-state recruits spurning the Wolverines for schools outside of Michigan. Now with Guerrant off the board and his trip to Michigan possibly being canceled, Whittingham needs to find another receiver target to go after.
With only one wide receiver commit in the Class of 2027, four-star recruit Quentin Burrell, Whittingham has his work cut out for him with the 2027 cycle starting to wrap up. Luckily, there are still some names on the board, and two of them happen to be visiting Ann Arbor this weekend.
1. 4-star Damani Warren - Las Vegas, NV
Four-star wide receiver prospect Damani Warren was actually a recent offer for Michigan, but the Wolverines quickly moved into a top spot in his recruiting choices. The Las Vegas native is down to just two schools, Michigan and the Wolverines' latest recruiting foe, Texas A&M. Along with Warren, Michigan is battling the Aggies for cornerback Joshua Dobson as well.
Coming as the No. 424-ranked 2027 recruit, Warren may not be the highest-rated recruit, but his size at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds gives Michigan a big target for a Michigan quarterback, either Underwood or his successor. Warren battled a shoulder injury throughout his sophomore season, but even through that, he finished with 35 receptions for 584 yards and five touchdowns.
2. 4-star Blake Wong - Norco, CA
As the only player on this list who does not have an offer from Michigan, four-star wide receiver Blake Wong may be the toughest get for Whittingham and his staff. The most enticing part of Wong as a receiver prospect is that he is currently being chased by multiple Big Ten and Big 12 schools, including Michigan's biggest rival, Ohio State.
In all seriousness, though, Wong could be a solid asset to Michigan's 2027 class as a smaller receiver coming in at 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, but he has solid speed. Wong was a deep threat in his sophomore year, averaging 14.1 yards per catch, totaling 40 receptions for 577 yards and five touchdowns. Wong is also an elite track star, running a season-best 11.17-second 100-meter time and a 22.68-second 200-meter time.
That kind of speed could be great for Michigan, which has bigger receivers currently on the roster and could use a speedster down the field. Plus, Michigan could stick it to Ohio State, but also Oregon, if it could lure Wong to Ann Arbor.
3. 3-star Charles Britton III - Belleville, MI
As the only Michigan-native on this list, four-star recruit Charles Britton III seems like a major need for Whittingham after the whiff on Guerrant. Britton, like Warren, is set to visit Ann Arbor this weekend for Victor Weekend, and is down to Michigan and Missouri as his choice of schools.
Britton has the best numbers out of all three of these wide receivers in his sophomore season with 53 receptions for 981 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 18.5 yards per catch. The biggest downside to Britton is his size, coming in at 5-foot-10 and 165 pounds. While he could be the smaller wide receiver Michigan needs, he would definitely need to bulk up before getting to campus to compete with bigger defensive backs.
