Michigan football is expected to be a "buyer" this spring in the transfer portal window as the Wolverines look to shore up the wide receiver and offensive tackle positions.
Michigan special teams coach JB Brown said on Tuesday that the Wolverines would be looking to the portal for some help on special teams, which could be a punter, maybe even a return specialist.
You never know, but adding Dominic Zvada and James Turner in the spring transfer portal window the past two cycles has certainly paid off. Zvada is back for another season and just hit a 60-yard field goal in practice.
Impact players can be found in the transfer portal, and here are three Michigan football should target this spring.
Syracuse WR Trebor Pena
It's not a big secret that Michigan football is seeking help at wide receiver, and Trebor Pena, the former Syracuse wideout who just entered the portal, would be a perfect fit.
There aren't many wide receivers worth spending on right now. Pena might be the only one, but he led the ACC with 84 receptions for 921 yards (4th in ACC) and nine touchdowns. Before last season, Pena had just 25 career receptions but thrived with Kyle McCord.
Just imagine what he would do with Bryce Underwood? Donaven McCulley has turned heads this spring, and the former Indiana transfer should be one of the starters. Fred Moore is another quality pass catcher for Michigan football, but adding Pena would add significant ceiling to the current wide receiver room, plus a ton of production.
Joe Cotton, OT South Dakota
Left tackle seems to be the one uncertainty regarding the Michigan football offensive line. It seems pretty clear that Greg Crippen will start at center. Giovanni El-Hadi is going to start at guard, and it feels like Nathan Efobi has a strong hold on the other guard spot.
Andrew Sprague, who might be the best Michigan football offensive lineman this season, when it's all said and done, has the right tackle job on lockdown, probably for the next 2-3 years.
Evan Link is the question. He could bump inside to guard, but I don't know that he'll ever be a true left tackle. Joe Cotton (6-7, 315), a South Dakota transfer, has played well at tackle during his career and is ranked No. 113 overall in the 2025 transfer portal, according to 247 Sports (16th offensive tackle).
Link did improve down the stretch. He's drawn praise this spring, so maybe he will be fine. However, if Michigan football is serious about upgrading the offensive line, the Wolverines could use a proven offensive tackle, something they weren't able to add in the winter.
Cotton would be a great fit. South Dakota is known for being a physical program, so Michigan football should reach out if it hasn't already.
Ferris State OT Bryce George
Another offensive tackle who entered the portal recently is Bryce George, from Division II Ferris State. Michigan football already added a guard from Ferris State during the winter transfer portal window, Lawrence Hattar, so why not kick the tires of another?
George is 6-foot-6, 315 pounds, and was an All-American last season. He is also a two-time all-conference selection. George is from Detroit. His former teammate is also joining Michigan football in the fall, so there are some ties to the program.
Michigan hasn't expressed any interest yet. Cal and Iowa are just two of the Power-4 programs to show interest. George is already visiting Iowa.
I'd love to see Michigan football at least kick the tires. The Wolverines could use another tackle, even just for competition. Cotton would be first choice but George feels underrated to me.
Either would be a quality addition, but for now, we'll have to wait and see what the Wolverines do.
