Michigan Wolverines news: Big Ten media poll released, Wolverines to host LB transfer, and more
The annual Big Ten Media poll released by Cleveland.com is out and favors Michigan football again plus more Michigan Wolverines news.
Preseason polls don’t mean a whole lot in the end, which Michigan football fans have learned the past two seasons, but they are still fun to follow.
The poll put out by Cleveland.com (Cleveland Plain Dealer) has been one of the best. 37 Big Ten media members predicted how the 2023 Big Ten season will play out and 27 of them picked the Michigan Wolverines to win the Big Ten title again.
Eight saw Ohio State as the best team, while two others picked Penn State. Those three teams have been viewed as the heavy favorites all offseason. No Big Ten West team was picked to win the conference. Wisconsin was picked as the team to win the West division narrowly over Iowa.
It’s the first time in four years that Ohio State hasn’t been tabbed as the Big Ten’s preseason favorite by the media. Of course, the Michigan Wolverines won the last two Big Ten titles so the media isn’t always right.
The poll was released this week since Big Ten Media Days will occur Wednesday and Thursday in Indianapolis. Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh will meet with the media on Thursday.
Currently, the Michigan Wolverines have a 13-game Big Ten winning streak and they will hope to extend that starting with Rutgers on Sept. 23.
Michigan football to host 2023 transfer linebacker from Northwestern
There’s been a lot of fallout from the Northwestern football scandal. Players had a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal after Pat Fitzgerald was fired and one player who took advantage was 2023 four-star recruit Nigel Glover.
Glover is 6-foot-3, 210 pounds out of Clayton, Ohio. He was ranked 335th overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings, as well as 10th in the state of Ohio.
Now, the former four-star linebacker is going to take a visit to Michigan football this weekend. The Wolverines are hosting their annual recruiting BBQ and according to Josh Henschke of Rivals, Glover will be in Ann Arbor this weekend.
Kentucky is also going to host Glover for a visit. The Wildcats’ coaching staff has strong ties to Ohio, so that’s not shocking, but this will be an interesting recruitment to watch. Glover would be eligible to play right away for the Michigan Wolverines or any other program in 2023.
Aidan Hutchinson thinks Michigan football can get over the hump
Michigan football legend Aidan Hutchinson has his own 2023 season to worry about with the Detroit Lions, who are trying to build off of their strong finish and make the playoffs this season.
However, Hutch talked about the Michigan Wolverines’ national title hopes in 2023, and here’s what the former Heisman runner-up had to say on the Rich Eisen show:
"“I can’t be heartbroken again at the playoffs,” Hutchinson said on The Rich Eisen Show. “Just that last year (against) TCU, that should have never ever, ever been at a loss. But I think the boys are gonna turn the page. I think the boys got a chance to win. I hope they get over that semi-final hurdle. I think if they win the (semifinal), the boys win it all. They gotta get over that first-round hurdle. But I think expectations are through the roof. (They have) all the talent in the world, same coaching staff, like nothing should change.”"
Mark Ingram also said he believes Michigan football is the favorite to win the national championship last week, so lots of people can see it happening.
Soon, we’ll actually see what this team can do on the field, as fall camp starts next week.
