New Fox college football analyst Mark Ingram is the latest college football pundit to call Michigan football a favorite heading into the 2023 season.

It’s hard to keep track of how many college football analysts have called Michigan football a national title contender.

There’s been a lot but Mark Ingram went farther than most. Rece Davis was another that indicated that Michigan football was his favorite to win the national title but here is what Ingram, a former Heisman Trophy-winning running back and Fox College Football analyst said about the Wolverines in an interview with Yahoo Spots:

"“You got Michigan, returning a quarterback, a double-headed monster at running back,” Ingram said to Yahoo via 247 Sports. “Fourteen starters on offense and defense. So are they the early season favorite? Go Blue? Jim Harbaugh and those boys up there? I think so. I kind of like returning starters…and Michigan, right now, I think is the early favorite.”"

Ingram certainly knows the value of a running back. He was a key part of Alabama’s first national championship team under Nick Saban.

Michigan football does have the top running back duo in college football in Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards. Yet, Ingram makes another really good point about why Michigan football is his favorite to win the national title, at least right now.

The one Michigan football has that others don’t right now

"“You got Georgia trying to break in a new quarterback. You got Alabama breaking in a new quarterback. You got Ohio State, Ryan Day, Marvin Harrison Jr., they’re breaking in a new quarterback,” Ingram said."

Michigan football, of course, returns J.J. McCarthy as its starting quarterback. McCarthy went 13-1 as a starter last season with the only loss coming in the Fiesta Bowl. He threw two interceptions during that game but tossed three touchdown passes and ran for another against Ohio State.

McCarthy should be even better this season, now that he’s a veteran. Many expect the offensive line to be elite once again and the defense returns more production than any other team in the Big Ten.

So it makes sense for Michigan football to be a favorite. Georgia is the favorite in my book until someone beats them. I also think Carson Beck will show early in the season that the Bulldogs are going to be just fine at quarterback.

Next. Michigan is undefeated against these FBS teams. dark

Still, Michigan football is a legit contender and Mark Ingram’s reasoning for the Wolverines as a 2023 national title favorite makes a lot of sense.
