Michigan football is back in the mix for a top-100 defensive back that recently decommitted from Georgia, plus a positive update with Zaquan Patterson.

The 2024 Michigan football recruiting class is ranked in the top five right now according to the 247 Sports composite rankings and if it’s able to land a couple more top-100 targets, the Wolverines could have a solid chance to stay there.

Jaylen Heyward is a name that Michigan football fans need to know and we have talked about him a lot in the past 24 hours since his decommitment from Georgia.

Michigan football has been recruiting him in the background and now that his recruitment is open again, the Wolverines need to try and get him on campus for a visit.

At least if he’s still among their top priorities. At safety, it’s not that simple. Michigan football might be open to taking three safeties, especially if a couple are ranked in the top 100 but they already have Jacob Oden so it’s not a huge need.

Versatile defensive backs that can play more than one spot are always valuable and you can never have enough good players at any position. That is why it’s also good news that Michigan football is trending up with Zaquan Patterson, another top-100 safety in the 2024 class.

Patterson has been to campus recently and according to EJ Holland of The Wolverine, he’ll take an unofficial visit to Michigan football next weekend.

The 6-foot, 185-pound safety is ranked 76th overall in the 2024 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Heyward is ranked 79th.

Both players are from Florida and the biggest competition seems to be Miami. It’s entirely possible that one winds up with the Hurricanes and one with the Wolverines.

It’s also possible Miami gets both. Chris Ewald is also going to visit this weekend according to EJ Holland and he’s from the same area so that’s important especially since he’s committed in 2025.

Michigan football’s 2024 class is great. It’s another layer to the foundation, but the Wolverines could use more elite talent, and landing either one of these defensive backs would be a huge win.
