Antonio Reeves staying at Kentucky is big blow to Michigan Basketball
Michigan basketball fans were holding out hope that Antonio Reeves would enter the transfer portal but he’s headed back to Kentucky.
Cross another name off the list of potential transfer portal additions for Michigan basketball as Kentucky guard Antonio Reeves is headed back to the Wildcats.
This comes from a 247 Sports report by Travis Branham who tweeted that Reeves moved back into his dorm and is expected back with the Wildcats.
Even though Reeves never officially entered the transfer portal, he was a hot name in Michigan basketball circles. Reeves even enrolled at Illinois State to take graduate classes.
Some thought that meant he would be heading for the portal. But, others pointed out that it could just mean a return to Kentucky. That’s now how it turned out and it’s a good move for the Wildcats. It’s also a heartbreaker for Michigan basketball.
What’s next for Michigan basketball?
The Wolverines are running out of options. Paul Mulcahy was also rumored to be interested in Kentucky, although it’s hard to know how this news will impact that.
However, Michigan basketball wasn’t mentioned among the teams that Mulcahy is focused on in a recent tweet by Trilly Donovan.
As we learned with Olivier Nkamhoua you can never say never. But this is a huge blow for Michigan basketball because there aren’t many other proven scoring guards/wings in the portal.
The Wolverines did get some good news on Tuesday with Nimari Burnett. He’ll be able to play this season, which means you have Dug McDaniel and Burnett as starters in the backcourt.
The Wolverines could still make another addition. West Virginia’s situation is one to watch. Chandler Lawson of Memphis is another name of interest, but he’s a 6-foot-8 forward and not someone that’s going to address the need for shooting or a scoring wing.
Michigan is going to need some guys currently on the roster to step up. That includes Youssef Khayat, Terrance Williams, and incoming freshman George Washington III, plus Jaelin Llewellyn.
Even if there isn’t another addition, this team has the pieces to be competitive. Yet, I wouldn’t be shocked if Juwan pulled some sort of rabbit out of his hat.
