Thoughts on a couple of recruiting misses for Michigan Football
Michigan football suffered a couple of key recruiting losses on Saturday as Boo Carter and Aaron Chiles committed elsewhere. Here are some thoughts.
There was some good news on Saturday for Michigan football recruiting as the Wolverines landed underrated running back Micah Kaapana.
Kaapana is listed as a three-star running back and is listed as No. 733 overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings. That seems insanely low because Kaapana averaged nearly 15 yards per carry, so this dude is electrifying.
However, the Wolverines suffered a couple of rare recruiting losses this cycle, and one of them hurt much more than another.
Boo Carter wound up choosing Tennessee over Michigan football. That was expected. The Wolverines made a strong push during his official visit but it wasn’t enough to sway Carter who is from Tennessee.
However, in a surprising move, Aaron Chiles, who had been considered a Michigan football lean for months, up and committed to the Florida Gators during his visit.
Thoughts on recruiting misses
The loss of Chile is a massive blow. He’s a top-100 linebacker and drew a lot of comparisons to Junior Colson as a super athletic linebacker that can do it all.
Chris Partridge really seemed to turn the tide in that recruitment and Michigan football clearly was in the lead. Yet, Chiles committed before he even took his official visit to Ann Arbor, which probably isn’t going to happen now.
Carter is a really talented player too. Michigan football was selling him on being able to play offense or defense, so he was a big loss too.
But it was definitely different. Florida essentially pulled the rug from under Michigan football and it’s kind of shocking. You can point to NIL or whatever, but it doesn’t really matter.
It’s also not a reason to panic. This recruiting class is going to be spectacular. It would have been better with Chiles who is 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, but you can’t win every recruitment.
Michigan football needs to close with Jeremiah Beasley, who was on campus this weekend. Jaden Smith committed this week and he could be a linebacker, but is more of a defensive athlete and isn’t a top-100 prospect.
On the whole, though, Michigan football has won more recruitments than it lost this cycle and that should continue.
