Michigan football landed another 2024 commitment on Saturday as three-star running back Micah Kaapana pledged to the Wolverines.

The Wolverines didn’t even make fans wait a day until they landed another commitment for the 2024 Michigan football recruiting class with the pledge of three-star running back Micah Kaapana.

Kaapana took his official visit to Michigan football last weekend and since then, he’s been trending heavily with crystal ball projections and expert predictions.

However, you never know when a recruit will actually pull the trigger on a commitment. Kaapana was expected to visit Nebraska next weekend, so it’s a good win for Michigan football on the recruiting trail.

Here are three thoughts for the Wolverines.

Don’t worry about the ranking

Kaapana is ranked 733rd overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings for the 2024 class. He’s ranked as the 55th-best running back in the class, which is hard to understand when you watch his highlights.

There’s long run after long run. His 247 Sports profile says that it took just 70 carries for Kaapana to rush for over 1,000 yards during his junior season. Last season, he scored 15 rushing touchdowns, as well as catching four touchdowns too.

Kaapana stands out on film. The competition might not be spectacular. I’m not really sure but I trust Mike Hart’s evaluation and I feel good about this commitment.

Probably not a good sign for Taylor Tatum

As much as I like Kaapana, this is probably a sign to me that Michigan football feels it’s clearly behind in the race for five-star running back Taylor Tatum.

USC has started to trend as the favorite following his recent official visit. Jordan Marshall already committed and gave the Wolverines a blue-chip running back in the class.

Kaapana might not be ranked as a blue-chip recruit (four or five-star) but Mike Hart has already proven he knows how to find talented running backs.

So even though Michigan football is probably going to miss on Tatum, the running back haul in the 2024 class is solid as is.

Insane momentum

This is the fourth commitment of the past week for Michigan football. The Wolverines now have 21 pledges in the 2024 class and it’s fair to wonder how big the class will be.

Certainly, the number is likely going beyond 25. Maybe it even approaches 30. This Michigan football team will be an older team and the transfer portal leads to departures, as well as additions every cycle.

We’ll see how things continue to play out but Michigan football is trending with about five different defensive linemen, plus they are in the mix for defensive backs, Jordan Shipp another wideout, and another offensive lineman.

At any rate, Michigan football continues to strengthen its hold on a top-five recruiting class, and who knows, maybe another commitment will come before the weekend is over.
