5 bold predictions for Michigan Basketball in 2022-23 season
Jett Howard will lead the Wolverines in 3-pointers
Last season, Caleb Houstan was expected to be Michigan’s sharpshooter and while he has his moments, it took him a minute to adjust to college basketball.
No matter how highly ranked recruits are, college basketball is different and it can take time to get comfortable. Bufkin was a McDonalds All-American and looked lost at times in 2021-22.
Will Jett Howard have a similar experience? His dad doesn’t think so and neither do I. Howard played well on the trip to Europe. He didn’t create shots and didn’t do much in terms of rebounding, but he made 3-pointers and that’s his primary focus, at least early on.
The 6-foot-8 top-50 recruit is expected to be Michigan’s starter at the three and his ability to knock down shots will be critical to providing the spacing that wasn’t there at times for Dickinson a year ago. Here’s what Juwan said earlier this week to Terry Mills on his radio show about Jett:
"“He’s going to be one of those young men that we’re going to lean on a lot this year. With good health and as he continues to — which he will — learn … there are some special things that are going to happen with him. I don’t know [if it will be] this year, next year. Who knows? But we just wish for good health.”"
I believe that Jett is going to make a pretty smooth transition to the Wolverines. He’s received nothing but praise from his teammates and he was playing at IMG Academy, so the level of competition was legit.
Howard doesn’t have to lead Michigan in scoring or even be the No. 2 option. He just needs to provide a consistent shooting presence. And if he can shoot in the high 30s in terms of 3-point percentage, this offense will be dangerous.
At any rate, no Michigan basketball player will make more treys than Jett Howard, that’s my bold prediction.
