Michigan vs. UConn: The Good, the Great, and the Perfect
Your Michigan Wolverines are 3-0 to start the season. After an annihilation of the UConn Huskies, the non-conference games are now complete. A shutout that we all hoped and prayed for was the cherry on top, especially going into Big Ten Play next week. 59-0, this game was nearly flawless, on both offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
While I usually do “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” There really wasn’t anything bad or ugly about this game, so today we are doing something different.
What was good, what was great, and what was perfect about Michigan football’s dominant win over the Huskies.
Good, Run game & Blake Corum: The run game against UConn wasn’t flashy, there weren’t any huge plays. It was simply just, good. Blake Corum however was the best running back on the field by far, especially with Donovan Edwards being out. He tied the record for most TDs in a singular game with 5. Last time this happened, it just happened to be against that school down south and it was Hassan Haskins during “The Game.”
The Michigan football run game had 192 yards, 71 of those came from Blake Corum. Backup running backs C.J Stokes, Isaiah Gash, and Danny Hughes also got quite a few reps later in the game. Not only did our running backs get yardage, so did some of our other players on offense. Quarterbacks Alex Orji and JJ McCarthy had run yards too!
The run game having multiple players get yardage was extremely beneficial to our offense. While there were not any big plays, they got the job done and they looked good and showed lots of promise for the future
Great, Offense: The offensive was explosive on Saturday. A whopping 59 points. It was truly an offensive showcase. JJ McCarthy looked incredible as per usual, going 15 for 18 for 214 yards. 8 different quarterbacks went into the game and all of them made an impact.
The Wolverines top 3 receivers, Ronnie Bell, Roman Wilson and AJ Henning all looked incredible as well. Bell had 7 receptions for 96 yards, Wilson had 3 for 64 yards, and Henning had 4 for 37. Henning even had a 61 yard run punt return that went for a touchdown.
Overall, the offense had 465 TOTAL yards (273 passing & 192 rushing).
Michigan football had 55 different players on offense take snaps against UConn. And still, the offense was firing on all cylinders.
Perfect, Defense: Clearly, the Michigan football defense was absolutely phenomenal and was in the best sense, perfect. They did not let UConn score a single point.
35 different defensive players saw the field and even during garbage time, they made sure UConn went scoreless.
Linebacker, Junior Colson was the defensive player of the game, making 5 tackles, 2 of them being solo and 1 TFL
UConn had 110 total yards the entire game. They had 86 rushing yards and 24 passing and only 6 first downs. Their total completion was 5 for 20 for 24 yards. Michigan’s secondary looked absolutely phenomenal.
This game was a total domination in all aspects. Now we go onto Big Ten play. Can Michigan keep this up? Only time will tell.. Maryland you’re next!
