Just two Michigan Football players make ESPN’s Top 100 in 2022
Michigan football is ranked in the top 10 of both polls and is expected to be really good again in 2022, so why are just two Wolverines in ESPN’s top 100?
It’s easy to get upset about some of the things put out by national pundits. Michigan football fans have already learned that in the last week or two.
But sometimes, it’s fair to question things, because when it comes from the really big outlets, you wonder how much in-depth knowledge these folks have about each and every team.
At any rate, when ESPN released its list of top 100 college football players for 2022, I was a little disappointed to see just two Michigan football players on the list.
Blake Corum is one and he’s a no-brainer but he’s ranked too low. Corum is 79th after rushing for 970 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, but he missed some time down the stretch with an injury.
As the expected starter, Corum is going to have a huge season and he’s even gotten some publicity as a potential Heisman candidate. Zach Charbonnet and a bunch of other backs were ranked ahead of him and while they are good players, Corum is a top-five back in my book nationally.
Cornerback DJ Turner also made the team at No. 86 overall. That was a good addition and I’ve been saying all offseason that he’s going to make a run at First-Team All-Big Ten.
But we can’t forget about Gemon Green, who has been a fall camp standout and had a really good spring too. He’s another that could emerge and if his ball skills can match his coverage ability, he could easily be a top-100 draft pick in 2023.
Erick All, Ryan Hayes, and Victor Oluwatimi all strike me as candidates for this list, along with Mazi Smith. I’d say Donovan Edwards too but I know he’s got a lot to prove.
Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy would probably get consideration if they weren’t battling it out for the job. Junior Colson will also be easily among college football’s top 100 players by season’s end, so I’d expect more names on the list next year.
Two doesn’t seem like enough for the No. 8 team in the country, but it’s understandable. Michigan football just will have to prove people wrong again in 2022.
Jake Moody earns Preseason All-American
Moody was incredible for Michigan football during the 2021 season and his return for this season was a big deal for the Wolverines. Moody was 23-of-25 last season and field goals and didn’t miss an extra point.
The special teams were really strong in all areas last season but the kicking of Moody became a weapon and anytime the Wolverines get into scoring range, he’s basically automatic.
Moody is also now a first-team preseason All-American according to 247 sports and that’s a designation that’s very deserved.
