The second of the two major preseason polls has been released and we break down where the Wolverines landed.

The AP Poll has released its preseason edition and where the media has the Michigan football team ranked might be contentious for some.

The Wolverines are ranked 8th nationally, behind 1. Alabama, 2. Ohio State, 3. Georgia, 4. Clemson, 5. Notre Dame, 6. Texas A&M, and 7. Utah.

Being behind one of Notre Dame, Texas A&M, or Utah would be enough of a talking point. However, the fact Michigan football falls behind all of them calls for a timeout on this.

Granted, just as we mentioned in the coaches poll breakdown, the Wolverines can quickly climb up the rankings with Ohio State and Notre set to play in the first week of the season.

Additionally, Alabama travels to play the Texas Longhorns in Austin, Texas in week two, the Georgia Bulldogs have a date with Oregon in the opener, and Texas A&M plays host to the Miami Hurricanes in week three.

No need for Michigan fans to “sweat the small stuff”

As we just talked about, there’s plenty of opportunity for the Wolverines to move up well inside the top 5 of both the coaches and AP poll if they can win their first three out of conference games (Colorado State, Hawaii, and UConn).

But more importantly, these rankings truly don’t mean anything. They are the bloomin’ onion of college football. A cheap, greasy appetizer that you smother in sauce and choke down while you wait for your steak to get off the grill.

Though it is nice to see the Wolverines inside the top ten with plenty of upward trajectory potential, we will wait to see where they wind up in the first CFP rankings — the playoff rankings — on November, 1st.
