3 exciting tidbits from Michigan Football’s fall camp
Through player quotes and some practice photos, we have picked up a few things that are pretty exciting for Michigan football.
The Michigan football team will take the field against Colorado State in three weeks. Yet, we still don’t know for sure who the starting quarterback will be.
Knowing Jim Harbaugh, we might not know until the first offensive series for the Wolverines. He’s pulled that trick before.
Most Michigan football fans and observers believe it’s going to be Cade McNamara, who was third-team All-Big Ten last season. But J.J. McCarthy has been pushing for the job and earlier this week, Harbaugh said it was essentially neck-and-neck.
Regardless of who is winning the job, one piece of really good news is the fact that McCarthy is healthy. He missed the spring due to shoulder issues but he’s 100 percent and that’s why this has become a real QB competition and not just one in name only.
McCarthy making “Mahomes-like” throws
That leads me to one of the things that got me excited this week. Junior Colson is one of my personal favorites on this team. I just think he’s going to have a huge season.
And when he spoke to the media this week, I got even more excited especially when he talked about McCarthy looking like Pat Mahomes.
"“He’s still doing those Patrick Mahomes throws, it’s awesome,” Colson said via On3. “It’s awesome to see. Right now, he’s having a lot of fun with it. So he’s been comfortable. He’s making a lot of smart reads right now, so that’s the big thing that’s changed. Take the checkdown as well as the deep ball. So I think he’s got a lot of maturity right now.”"
Colson talked about how the game has slowed down for him. He also points out how it’s slowed down for McCarthy. The part about the Mahomes throws is cool, but we always knew McCarthy could do that.
When he masters the position and makes all the right decisions, then he’ll be nearly impossible to stop and it sounds like he’s getting closer. Colson talked about him taking the check-downs and McCarthy seeming more mature as a quarterback.
That has me even more excited than the Mahomes stuff. That’s what separated Cade and McCarthy last season. I still don’t know if it will be enough to unseat Cade, who is a championship quarterback in his own right.
But either way, it’s good for Michigan football, which has the best QB room it has ever had under head coach Jim Harbaugh.
