Point guard: Frankie Collins

It’s time for Michigan basketball to break the cycle of graduate transfer point guards. Mike Smith and DeVante Jones were good finds and each was solid.

However, every time you go to the portal for a starting-caliber player, it’s a gamble and at some point, that well is going to run dry.

If there is enough room in terms of scholarships, I get the thinking of adding a combo guard with some point guard ability, such as Michigan had with Eli Brooks. There’s certainly a risk in handing the keys to Frankie Collins.

But, he did captain the ship in the NCAA Tournament win over Colorado State and played really well in an important win over Michigan State too. His defense will be an upgrade over Jones and his ability to get to the bucket is undeniable.

However, his poor shooting percentage also can’t be ignored. He was terrible from 3-point range and the free throw line and that’s a major concern. Yet, if the right pieces surround him and Collins isn’t relied on to score a bunch next season, he’s my ideal option with Dug McDaniel behind him.
