Michigan Hockey can clinch its first berth in the Frozen Four since 2018 with a win over Quinnipiac. Here’s how to watch and what to know.

It has been an incredible 2021-22 for Michigan athletics. The football program won the Big Ten championship and reached the playoff; wrestling won the Big Ten and crowned a national champion — both basketball teams made the Sweet 16 and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

And after yesterday’s win by the Michigan women’s basketball team, the Wolverines now have two programs in the final 8 of their NCAA tournament right now as the Michigan hockey team will be taking on Quinnipiac Sunday night for the right to go to the Frozen Four.

The Wolverines opened the 16-team NCAA hockey tournament with a win over American. Brendan Brisson had a goal and two assists, while Matty Beniers also managed a goal and an assist for the Wolverines. Erik Portillo managed 29 saves.

Michigan hockey vs Quinnipiac what to know

Michigan hockey was able to win the Big Ten championship but the Wolverines struggled this season against Notre Dame winning one of just five games and Quinnipiac, who is strong defensively, was compared to Notre Dame by Maize and Brew.

"“Although the Bobcats have a better record and better statistics, Quinnipiac is essentially a less talented Notre Dame. This isn’t a slight, but the Bobcats just didn’t play the same level of competition as the Irish and do not have the same talent depth on their roster. However, any team that plays comparably to Notre Dame is a concern for Michigan whom went 1-5 against the Irish this season.”"

Quinnipiac is statistically the best defensive team in college hockey as it has allowed just 45 goals this season. Goalie Yaniv Perets has also been stellar in net and has a goals against average of 1.07 and 11 shutouts to his credit. The Bobcats have 16 as a team.

Quinnipiac’s goals against average is a stingy 1.10, while Michigan hockey allows 2.12 goals per game. However, the Wolverines are one of the top offensive teams in the country and average just under four goals per game.

Beniers and Brisson each have 20 goals and that’s with five missed games each. Luke Hughes is right there too at 16 and we can’t forget about Kent Johnson (29 assists) or Owen Porter (25 assists).

Quinnipiac does score 3.29 goals per game with senior Wyatt Bongiovanni leading the way, however, the Bobcats have seven skaters who have reached double figures in goals scored.

Michigan hockey is the No. 1 overall seed but with just eight teams remaining, nothing can be taken for granted. The winner advances to the Frozen Four.
