It’s a great time to be a Michigan Wolverine (fan)

It was a great weekend for the Michigan Wolverines and with the women’s basketball team still to play for the Sweet 16, the good times aren’t over. 

Is it a great time to be a fan of the Michigan Wolverines or what? Dating back to the start of football season and even a year ago at this time, it’s hard to complain.

Last March, Michigan basketball fans were treated to a Big Ten championship, as well as a run to the Elite 8, plus the Michigan women’s basketball team made the Sweet 16 for the first time ever — a feat the Michigan women will try to duplicate Monday against Villanova.

And yes that’s not a typo, the women play Nova today in Ann Arbor (6:00 PM ET, ESPNU) in the second round of the women’s tournament — to reach the Sweet 16, while the Michigan basketball (men’s team) will play Nova on Thursday in San Antonio in the Sweet 16.

The Michigan hockey team should have been part of that magical March last year but its NCAA tournament run was canceled due to COVID-19. Yet, the Wolverines responded by winning the Big Ten hockey title Saturday night and are now the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament.

That victory over Minnesota came just hours after the Michigan basketball team upset third-seeded Tennessee. The women’s team also beat American in the opening round.

Oh, and a couple of weeks ago, the Michigan wrestling team won the Big Ten title too, not to mention the fact that the football team won the Big Ten title too and reached the College Football Playoff, not to mention its win over Ohio State.

Nick Suriano, a Michigan wrestler did win the 125-pound national championship this weekend for good measure, while a slew of teammates earned All-American honors. The women’s gymnastics team also won another Big Ten title, which, pardon the pun, is routine for the Wolverines who are the reigning national champions.

Of course, the run by Juwan Howard’s team to the Sweet 16 is what most Michigan fans are happiest about right now, but there is a lot to feel good about if you are a Michigan Wolverines fan and that’s not going to change anytime soon.

Especially since the Michigan basketball women are poised to give us something else to celebrate on Monday evening.
