Guards

DeVante Jones: D

Here’s hoping that Juwan Howard doesn’t need to go to the transfer portal to find a point guard for next season because it’s clear that DeVante Jones just hasn’t really worked out.

Jones has played much better in the past month and his numbers aren’t that different from Mike Smith a year ago. But Saturday was another example of Jones not getting it done against quality competition and that’s been the case all season.

Jones scored just six points (on 2-of-7 shooting) and had three fouls, plus two turnovers. He did have two steals and three assists, but the moment just felt too big for him.

Eli Brooks: D

I can’t give Eli Brooks a failing grade but he didn’t play very well. Brooks was just 3-for-11 against Michigan State and although he had six assists, the Spartans did a good job of turning him into a scorer. Houstan should be second on the team in shots, not Brooks, Diabate, and Jones. Michigan State executed its plan perfectly and Brooks couldn’t step up in a big spot.

Frankie Collins: D

Frankie Collins still has a lot of learning to do. That was evident again on Saturday but all of these minutes will prove invaluable next season. His 3-point attempt was probably ill-advised but when it all slows down, he’s going to be good.
