5. One of Michigan’s best teams

Everyone loves to compare this Michigan football team to great ones in the past. There was the 1997 team that won the national championship. The team in 1985 that finished No. 2 and many others over the years.

It’s been a while since Michigan had a team like this. One that beat Ohio State, won the Big Ten and heads to the postseason with a chance to play for the national title.

That’s why team feels like the 1997 team to me. That team was ranked 14th in the AP poll to start the season. This team wasn’t ranked at all.

That squad had to battle through a difficult schedule and so did the 2021 team, and outside of one slip-up, one that Big Ten refs certainly aided in a big way, this team answered every challenge.

It trailed for about 40 minutes of game time all season long. And against Ohio State and Iowa, for the Big Ten East and Big Ten Title, Michigan football trailed for only a matter of minutes last week.

That’s why it has a strong argument to be No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings. It’s also why this is one of the best teams in Michigan football history.

Two more wins might end that debate for good. But even if this team doesn’t win another game, it put Michigan back on top, and that, will never be forgotten.
