Michigan Football: Where will Wolverines be in playoff rankings?
Following a terrible loss to Michigan State, where should be Michigan football rank in the playoff rankings that come out Tuesday?
While a huge part of the Michigan football fanbase is very doom and gloom right now — with good reason, the Wolverines are still 7-1 and have plenty to play for in the last four games.
For starters, if Michigan football is able to win out which I know is a monumental task, it could still have a shot at the Big Ten title if everything works out right.
However, Michigan would need a lot of help, most likely two Michigan State losses, which isn’t something you can count on at this point. The Wolverines will also need to beat Indiana, Penn State, Maryland, and the dreaded Ohio State.
But even if Michigan just wins three of four games, it should be back in a New Year’s Six Bowl, especially if its only defeats are to MSU and OSU.
Even following Michigan’s loss, the Wolverines are ranked 9th in the AP poll and Saturday Blitz has U-M projected 11th in Tuesday’s playoff rankings.
To me, that seems a little low. I’d be surprised if Michigan wasn’t in the top 10. The win over Wisconsin is looking better by the week and the Badgers win over Iowa also helps U-M in the bowl pecking order as far as the Big Ten is concerned.
Michigan football can still achieve plenty
Right now, Michigan would be third behind Ohio State and Michigan State. One of those teams, most likely the Buckeyes based on recent history, will win the Big Ten and make the playoff.
Michigan State would likely head to the Rose Bowl, which could leave Michigan a shot at the Fiesta Bowl or Peach Bowl — if the Wolverines can beat Penn State — far from easy.
Yes, Saturday was a brutal loss. But the future is still bright and this reset by Jim Harbaugh and company has been a success — so far.
Most fans were hoping for seven or eight wins this season. Michigan football has a legitimate shot at 10 even without beating Ohio State.
Obviously, beating Ohio State would make this season a success but so would 10 wins and a New Year’s Six bowl game which is a real possibility despite the Michigan State debacle.
