Michigan Football: Breaking down commitment of Kenneth Grant
Michigan football’s resurgence on the field has led to some momentum on the recruiting trail and on Tuesday, that led to the commitment of Kenneth Grant.
Flat-out, four-star defensive tackle Kenneth Grant was one of Michigan football‘s top targets and on Tuesday, he announced his commitment to the Wolverines.
Michigan has been trending with crystal ball projections for Grant, who is listed at 6-foot-4, 335 pounds according to his 247 sports profile. He’s ranked 511th overall and is a three-star recruit in the 247 sports composite rankings, but 247 has him rated as a 90 and a four-star recruit.
Either way, landing Grant is huge for Michigan football and is one of the biggest commitments of the 2022 recruiting class. And not just because he’s a massive human being with athleticism.
Ohio State had an offer on the table and from the sounds of it, a committable offer. The Buckeyes don’t really mess around. He went to their camp and stood out. But Michigan was after him longer and recruited him harder.
He visited during the Washington game which was an impressive win and more than anything, he probably wanted to see Michigan win some games for stability purposes.
Unless the wheels completely fall off, Jim Harbaugh is going to be the coach at Michigan and it feels like his reset has the program headed back in the right direction.
What this commitment means for Michigan
This is the second defensive line commitment for the Wolverines this month. We talked about how Mason Graham is a steal for Michigan football and Grant will be too.
He’s also a true nose tackle, which is something that the Wolverines don’t currently have. That was a selling point to Grant and also that there’s a real chance he plays early. Here’s what Allen Trieu of 247 sports wrote in his scouting report about Grant:
"“Massive interior prospect. Looks like a classic nose guard but is not just a gap plugger in high school. Runs surprisingly well for a big guy, shows closing speed and will pursue plays. Nimble and can make offensive linemen miss their punch but can also drive them straight back with brute strength. Has to be more consistent play to play but has upside because size and ability to move at that size are rare.”"
Here’s what Grant had to say about why he chose the Wolverines over Ohio State and Wisconsin, the team that Michigan will face Saturday.
"“The program just fits me right. I feel like I’m very comfortable there and I can be myself there and what they told me was 100 percent real. Besides football the lifestyle they live and what they can do 40 years from now. That was a big factor for me and my family and education was a big factor.”"
The Wolverines now have 18 commitments in the 2022 class and their class is rated 15th overall according to the 247 sports team rankings.
More commitments could be on the way and Michigan has a very real chance to land multiple five-star recruits this cycle, as well as others such as Deone Walker and Amorion Walker.
Right now, the momentum is building and September has been a good month for Michigan football recruiting.
