Michigan Football: CJ Carr should be a priority for Wolverines in 2024
CJ Carr is already a priority for Michigan football in the 2024 recruiting class and the legacy recruit recently ranked in 247 sports top 100.
It’s never too early to start building relationships in recruiting and with 2024 quarterback CJ Carr, Michigan football already had a foot in the door, seeing as he is Lloyd Carr’s grandson.
Carr is out of Saline, Michigan and the 6-foot-2 170-pound quarterback is shaping up to be a top priority for the Wolverines in the 2024 class, not only because of his position but his talent too.
The Michigan football staff certainly saw something it liked in Carr because when the offer was extended, Carr had just one high school start under his belt.
Yet, he’s been impressive on the camp circuit, and in the initial 247 sports rankings for 2024, he comes in at No. 99. Carr is listed as the 10th-best quarterback recruit in the 2024 class and is currently the No. 2 player in the state of Michigan.
While there is a long, long way to go in his recruitment, Michigan football would seem to have a leg up on the competition just due to the family ties. Lloyd Carr was the last head coach to lead the Wolverines to a national title (1997) and a Big Ten championship back in 2004.
Of course, the fact that CJ Carr is the grandson of a former head coach doesn’t mean he will commit to the Wolverines. It’s certainly a positive and so is the fact that he visited the Michigan football BBQ over the summer.
Michigan State, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Indiana, Penn State, and Wisconsin are all in the mix, but Carr has been a frequent visitor on campus, and here’s what he said to 247 sports about U-M:
"“Watching film with Coach Weiss stood out to me a lot. He taught me a lot about coverages in that short period of time we had together. I really appreciated how he really wanted to teach me something new and get me better. I think (our relationship) has grown a lot during these visits. Every time I visit, my relationship with all of the coaches grows!”"
Just like Dante Moore in the 2023 class, Carr figures to be a top priority moving forward, and just imagine landing those quarterbacks in back-to-back classes.
A 2022 commitment this weekend?
Recently, Michigan football received a Futurecast projection from EJ Holland of Rivals for three-star defensive tackle Tawfiq Thomas, who is actually announcing his commitment on Saturday.
However, there have been no additional expert projections from Rivals or 247 sports ahead of the decision today. Thomas is also considering Arkansas, Kansas, and South Florida.
Thomas is a teammate of the current Michigan commit, Mario Eugenio, and is a big body listed at 6-foot-3, 360 pounds according to his 247 sports profile. He’s also ranked as the 1,039 prospect according to the 247 composite rankings for 2022.
It’s hard to get a read on this one. It was reported that Thomas was going to visit Michigan over the summer but took a virtual visit instead. So without him actually being on campus, it’s hard to see him choosing the Wolverines.
Thomas has visited Kansas. He was offered by Arkansas later in the process and didn’t visit there but told Scott Chasen of 247 sports he has always wanted to play in the SEC. Maybe that’s an indicator. I’d lean towards Kansas or Arkansas.
For Michigan football fans, it’s probably not a bad thing. It could be a sign that the Wolverines feel good about some of the other top targets at the position such as Deone Walker, Kenneth Grant, and Isaiah Hastings.
