Some Michigan football fans yearn for a return to the days under former head coach Lloyd Carr and in some ways, they could get their wish as the Wolverines offered the grandson of Carr a scholarship over the weekend.

CJ Carr, the grandson of long-time Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, and a quarterback at Saline High out of Saline, Michigan, reported a scholarship offer from the Wolverines over the weekend.

Carr is a member of the 2024 recruiting class and just finished his freshman season in high school, but he clearly caught the eye of Michigan, enough to offer at least.

Of course, Carr has started just one game as a high school quarterback. He’s only a freshman though, so in terms of varsity starts, that’s not a huge surprise.

But the quarterback ahead of him, Larry Robinson, a three-star prospect in the class of 2023, was injured and unable to play during the postseason according to MLive, so Carr got the start and was 20-of-28 for 231 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Carr certainly seems to have the physical traits needed. He’s listed on his 247 sports profile as a 6-foot-2, 175-pound quarterback already and he still has three years of high school left.

And for those wondering whether Michigan football extended this offer simply because it’s Carr’s grandson, well, think again, because shortly after announcing his offer from Michigan, Carr also tweeted that he had a scholarship offer from in-state rival Michigan State.

Carr isn’t ranked yet according to 247 sports in the class of 2024 and it seems likely he won’t be the starter next season for his high school team, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be a really good player down the road. He’s already shown flashes.

It could hurt his recruitment a little bit if he spends his sophomore season as a backup, but the Wolverines and Spartans are already in on him and others will likely follow.

Carr’s highlights actually say that he’s 6-foot-3 and he throws the ball well. He’s accurate and shows some ability to push the ball down the field with some velocity over the middle.

It will be interesting to watch his development but this could shape up to be an important in-state recruiting battle between the Wolverines and Spartans, although if U-M really wants Carr, you’d think the influence of his grandfather would make the difference.
