Week 5 @ Wisconsin October 5th

Michigan and Wisconsin both have difficult September games on their schedule. As mentioned, Michigan hosts Washington in week 2.

Wisconsin has Penn State at home in Week 1 and Notre Dame in week 3 in a “neutral” site game at Lambeau Field. Should Michigan and Wisconsin enter their week 5 battle unscathed, I think there is a solid chance that College GameDay will head to Madison.

In the past five years, the Michigan and Wisconsin matchup has been featured on College GameDay twice.

In 2017, College GameDay went to Madison for a matchup between the 8-2 Wolverines and 10-0 Badgers. Wisconsin won that meeting 24-10.

The following year, College GameDay came to Ann Arbor. Wisconsin was 4-1 entering the game while Michigan was 5-1. Michigan handled the Badgers 38-13.

This year’s matchup could again come again with both programs ranked in the top 20 at least. Michigan is unranked to begin the season in both the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll.

However, Michigan should beat Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, and Rutgers. If Michigan beats Washington, it’s realistic that the Wolverines will be in the top 15 heading into Madison.

Wisconsin begins the year ranked 12th in the AP top 25 and 15th in the Coaches Poll. Wisconsin could have two impressive wins on its resume if it beats Penn State and Notre Dame.

Winning those games vault Wisconsin into the top 10. A top-15 matchup between two successful programs would immediately receive consideration to host College GameDay.

Additionally barring the Big Ten Championship, Michigan and Wisconsin are not scheduled to play again for the foreseeable future. That could factor into ESPN’s decision as well.
