Michigan Football: Pair of 2022 targets set to decide soon
A pair of Michigan football recruiting targets in 2022 could be deciding soon and here’s what to make of it.
Michigan football could be getting some clarity on its defensive tackle board in a few days time as one of its 2022 defensive tackle targets is committing on Saturday.
The player who will be announcing his decision is three-star defensive tackle Tawfiq Thomas, who is ranked outside the top 1,000 in the 247 sports composite rankings (1,036th overall) but he’s listed as 6-foot-3, 360 pounds and is a teammate of current U-M commit Mario Eugenio.
Things have been fluid at defensive tackle as Michigan has been pushing with guys like Deone Walker, Walter Nolen, Kenneth Grant, and also Isaiah Hastings.
It’s hard to gauge where Thomas fits on the board but he would certainly help fill the need at defensive tackle as Michigan doesn’t have any defensive tackles committed in 2022.
EJ Holland of Rivals put in a Futurecast pick for Thomas recently but there haven’t been any other expert picks yet to follow — at Rivals or 247 sports.
However, with Thomas announcing his commitment date on Monday, there should be some crystal ball projections coming in the next few days leading up to the commitment.
The other contenders, which Thomas recently named in a final top four are Kansas, South Florida, and Arkansas, as well as the Wolverines.
A commitment by Thomas to U-M could be an indication of where things stand with other defensive tackles and if he doesn’t choose the Wolverines, it might be that he wasn’t as high up on the board as the other names I mentioned. Time will tell.
Dillon Tatum deciding “soon”
Soon has become a relevant term in the recruitment of Dillon Tatum but the four-star prospect from West Bloomfield is due to make a decision before the start of high school season according to what he told Chad Simmons for On3recruits.
Tatum recently visited Michigan football and head coach Jim Harbaugh, but Michigan State still has momentum, and honestly, I don’t have much confidence.
I’m getting Rocco Spindler/Drew Kendall vibes here. Michigan was the favorite and has controlled the crystal ball projections for months now. But that didn’t result in a commitment and it wouldn’t be surprising if he chose MSU in the end.
