Michigan Football: What we’ve learned so far in fall camp
Michigan football is coming up on the halfway point of fall camp and here’s what we have learned so far about the Wolverines.
The Michigan football team hit the practice field on August 6 and with the season-opening game against Western Michigan less than three weeks away, the excitement is palpable.
It’s still hard to gauge what Michigan football is going to be this season. Unlike the NFL, there is no preseason or sneak peek. Our first look won’t come until the first game.
Yet, we are starting to get a feel for the team through fall camp, and even though Michigan doesn’t allow a ton of access, Harbaugh spoke to the media quite a bit last week, as have his players, not to mention some slick videos but out by the social media department.
All of that has given us a glimpse into fall camp and with that in mind, here are the things we have learned about Michigan football so far:
Harbaugh likes his quarterbacks
It’s pretty clear that Cade McNamara is going to be the starting quarterback this season for Michigan football, at least to open. But you can tell that Jim Harbaugh feels good about the quarterbacks and that five-star freshman J.J. McCarthy has been making a move.
And here’s some analysis from the Big Ten Network who visited Michigan practice last week with some thoughts on why Cade will be starting:
"“Yeah, there’s no doubt that that’s the order based on today’s practice, and I don’t think that’ll really change,” Gerry DiNardo said. “I think Cade’s the most prepared, and very talented. J.J. might have the most talent — again, it’s hard to really tell without pads — and [redshirt junior Alan] Bowman, the transfer from Texas Tech, doesn’t really look like he’s in the picture.”"
McNamara doesn’t get the credit he deserves as far as his talent is concerned. He was committed to Notre Dame and pretty high on Alabama’s board back when he was a recruit.
McNamara can play but the fact that he and McCarthy are both playing well this fall is a good sign for Michigan football. That being said, we heard a lot of good things about Joe Milton last season and we all know how that worked out.
