Michigan Football: 4-star QB to visit as Wolverines aim for flip
Michigan football will get a visit from four-star quarterback Justyn Martin, who is currently committed to Cal and is a flip target for the Wolverines.
The first part of Michigan football trying to flip Justyn Martin was when the Wolverines extended him an offer last week. The next step of that process is getting a visit, which the Wolverines have now secured with the California commitment.
Things have been heating up with Martin and the Wolverines, as well as other programs. He’s also going to take a visit to Michigan State, so U-M isn’t the only team trying to flip him.
Michigan football offered May 30 but that was after a long evaluation. Both the current coaches on staff and the previous quarterbacks coach had been in touch with Martin, who was recently in touch with head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Martin seemed excited about getting the offer from Michigan and also talking to Harbaugh. Jim might get his fair share of criticism, but he’s still a big name and you can see the difference it makes when he personally connects with kids. It made a difference with Will Johnson too.
Courtney Morgan has been a key part of this too and now, Michigan is taking its pursuit to the next level by hosting Martin for a visit according to Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider.
Flipping Martin would be huge for Michigan
Martin is one of three quarterbacks the Wolverines are currently targeting/recruiting. Conner Harrell, a three-star quarterback out of Alabama, and Nate Johnson, a three-star from California are the others.
Johnson is an impressive track athlete and could have a future at wide receiver or running back, so it’s possible the Wolverines take two quarterbacks if Johnson is one of them.
Martin is 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, and ranked 269th overall in the 2022 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings. Harrell and Johnson are both ranked outside the top 600.
According to a recent evaluation on Martin from Greg Biggins of 247 sports, Martin has upside too.
"“There has never been a question about Martin’s potential and his ceiling is very high. He looks good mechanically and has tightened his release. He has a smooth, easy delivery and the ball jumps out of his hand. He’s a plus athlete who made a lot of nice off-platform throws and if he can continue to improve in his ability to process the game and play with poise under duress, the sky’s the limit.”"
With Martin visiting Michigan and other schools, it seems like a flip is a real possibility. The reality is that the Wolverines top competition might even be Michigan State or Ole Miss, instead of Cal.
A lot could depend on these visits and the Wolverines will need to impress Martin if they are going to be able to close and get him away from Cal.
