Michigan football expands the cornerback recruiting board in the 2022 class as the Wolverines offered Kentucky commitment Andre Stewart. Plus more on a five-star recruit taking a visit.

On Saturday, the Michigan football team made a few new offers to recruits in the 2022 class and two of those offers went out to committed prospects.

One of those offers was to four-star quarterback Justyn Martin, who is out of California and is actually committed to Cal.

But that’s not the only player Michigan is now trying to flip as the Wolverines also offered Georgia cornerback Andre Stewart, who is committed to Kentucky.

Stewart is ranked as the No. 484 recruit in the 2022 class, as well as ranking 48th among cornerbacks according to the 247 sports composite rankings.

Stewart committed to Kentucky back in March and if you guessed that Steve Clinkscale was part of his recruitment, you are right as the former Kentucky cornerbacks coach, who now works at U-M was key in landing Stewart, so it makes sense for the staff to try and flip him.

As far as the cornerbacks go in the 2022 class, Michigan already has two committed. One is a five-star recruit and the No. 1 player in the state of Michigan, Will Johnson, who is actually taking a visit to USC. Kody Jones is a four-star cornerback commitment that’s also been solid.

Myles Pollard is another recruit that Michigan is hoping to land and the addition of Clink seemed to make a positive impact in that recruitment too, but Pollard is being pursued by other major programs, so it’s far from a sure thing.

5-star Ohio DB visiting Michigan

Looking ahead to the 2023 recruiting class, The Michigan Insider reported that Sonny Styles, the No. 15 ranked recruit overall in that class, will visit Michigan football next week.

Styles is a 6-foot-4, 205-pound safety, and a truly elite prospect. Pulling him out of the Buckeye state is going to be a chore. Yet, Clink is from Youngstown. Courtney Morgan has ties to Ohio too and this visit is a very good sign that U-M will at least be in the mix.

Here’s more from the Michigan Insider on the pursuit of Styles:

"“Michigan’s new defensive staff hasn’t been fazed by those long odds and has been working hard to make up for lost time since they arrived in Ann Arbor earlier this year. With the recent hire of Steve Clinkscale they’ve added an Ohio native, elite recruiter, and a reputation for developing defensive backs. “Clink” will add tangibly to the whole-staff recruiting effort the Wolverines have deployed in hopes of moving up the Styles’ list.”"

Styles is the No. 1 safety in the 2023 class. Michigan hasn’t landed a player like that out of Ohio in a long time and while I wouldn’t be overly optimistic in this recruitment, with Clink on staff, the Wolverines will absolutely start recruiting better in Ohio.

Maybe it will start with Styles.
