QB Nate Johnson

Michigan football fans have reason to be confident in the potential commitments of Tatum and Phillips, but there are few sure things in recruiting.

Maybe Tatum decides to take more time and it’s possible that Phillips does the same, especially if more Power-5 programs enter the mix, which is definitely possible.

So if Tatum or Phillips don’t pull the trigger on a commitment, to me, another strong candidate to be the next 2022 commit is three-star quarterback Nate Johnson out of California.

Johnson has emerged as the top target at quarterback and recently, he was projected to the Wolverines. He’s ranked 943rd overall in the 2022 class and 23rd among dual-threat quarterbacks, but there is a lot to like about his game.

Matt Weiss, the new QB coach even talked about some similarities to Lamar Jackson. He certainly would bring a different element to the offense as the track star is a true running threat, who can sling it too.

While Michigan has been the top contender, a number of Pac-12 schools have started to make a push. Arizona State offered just last week. Oregon State and Utah have also offered. Johnson is visiting both of those schools along with Michigan in June.

You always wonder about the distance factor for a California kid, especially as he gets more west-coast offers, but the Wolverines have done a great job with Johnson, and with Matt Weiss involved, Michigan should win out, which could ultimately mean Johnson is the next commitment.
