Michigan football has made three-star quarterback Nate Johnson its top target at the position and one expert is predicting he will land at U-M in 2022.

Quarterback recruiting has been a bit of an adventure for Michigan football in the class of 2022. For a long time, it was hard to determine a top target.

The Wolverines offered a number of high-profile recruits at the position in 2022 but they weren’t able to make any real traction.

During a few short months, it seemed like all the top targets at the position, even the newest prospects offered were committing. Even Rutgers recently landed a high-ranked four-star quarterback who was offered by Michigan in Gavin Wimsatt.

But Michigan has started to emerge as the favorite with one recruit at quarterback and that’s Nate Johnson, who is going to take an official visit to Ann Arbor in June.

Currently, Johnson is a three-star recruit out of California and is ranked as the No. 941 prospect overall in the 2022 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings, as well as the 23rd-ranked dual-threat quarterback.

And according to a new Futurecast prediction from Michigan recruiting analyst, EJ Holland of Rivals, Johnson will wind up committing in the 2022 class as he lodged a new pick for the Wolverines Wednesday.

Johnson is 6-foot-3, 183 pounds and he’s a true dual-threat, which you can see for yourself with this impressive run in the California high school season.

New quarterback coach Matt Weiss knows what to do what a dual-threat as he coached Lamar Jackson with the Ravens and has an idea of how to really implement a system that includes a quarterback run game, which has always been missing from the Wolverines offense.

Shea Patterson added a little of that and of course, Denard Robinson did about a decade ago, but Michigan football hasn’t had the dual-threat guys like Ohio State and others have consistently.

Yet, Johnson can also throw the football, as he shows in this highlight, and was probably hurt by the delayed spring season in California.

Johnson has some impressive highlights and it’s easy to see why the coaching staff would like his potential. Michigan doesn’t have a top-100 quarterback it can get on board, so it makes sense to take a shot on a kid with big-time potential and that’s Johnson.

We’ll see if more expert predictions follow, but it wouldn’t be stunning to see Johnson commit to the Wolverines in the next few months.
