QB battle update

Maybe the biggest takeaway from spring ball so far is that the quarterback competition is going to be wide open this fall.

All reports have basically said that Cade McNamara is the leader right now but that isn’t a big shock. He’s entering his third year in the program while five-star freshman J.J. McCarthy is still trying to learn the playbook and adapt.

Yet, McCarthy has had his moments, and here’s a summary from Chris Balas of Rivals on where things stand:

"“Freshman J.J. MccCarthy has a bright future, but he’s been inconsistent and is still learning the playbook. It’s clear Texas Tech transfer Alan Bowman will have a shot here, and it’s good they brought him in. He might be more than just solid depth.”"

Alan Bowman isn’t taking part in spring workouts, but he’s the only quarterback with extended college experience. At some point, it feels like McCarthy will end up as the starter in 2021, yet the Wolverines need McNamara or Bowman to be the bridge until the time comes.
