Michigan Football: Nate Johnson becoming focus at QB in 2022

Recruiting the quarterback position hasn’t gone all that well for Michigan football in the class of 2022 and the hits just sort of keep on coming.

Throughout his cycle, Michigan football has been involved with a number of different quarterback recruitments, but the Wolverines just haven’t been able to gain any traction.

A recent target, four-star quarterback Drew Allar, out of Ohio, seemed like a legitimate prospect to join Michigan’s 2022 class, but he just committed to Penn State last week.

Beyond that, a number of other quarterback recruits Michigan offered during this cycle have committed elsewhere or are trending with crystal ball picks to do so, such as top-100 QB Gavin Wimsatt, a kid with a Michigan offer who appears headed to Rutgers.

That’s interesting to me that Michigan isn’t involved there and maybe U-M didn’t push enough. But at this point, the only option on the board that doesn’t appear headed to another school is three-star signal-caller Nate Johnson in California.

Johnson is pretty under the radar right now in terms of ranking, but he was offered by the Wolverines more than a month ago. He’s ranked as the No. 907 prospect overall in the 2022 class and the 22nd dual-threat quarterback, but there a lot to like about his talent.

Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider caught up with one of his coaches and while you will need to subscribe ($) to read the whole thing, Johnson is compared to Denard Robinson.

The kid is 6-foot-2, 183 pounds, and doesn’t have a ton of power-5 offers. Oregon State just jumped in the mix along with a number of Mountain West programs.

However, Johnson is getting ready to start his high school season which was delayed in California and that could give his rankings a boost. Either way, he’s pretty much it in terms of quarterback recruiting unless some new offers and names emerge at the position.

Next. 3 candidates to commit next in 2022. dark

It probably wasn’t by design, things just haven’t worked out this cycle for quarterbacks and Michigan, so the Wolverines will have to focus on a diamond in the rough and Johnson could be that guy — if Michigan can close the deal.
