Michigan football is in a bit of a tough spot when it comes to quarterbacks in the 2022 recruiting class after another top target chose Penn State.

While a lot of things continue to go well for Michigan football in the 2022 recruiting class, one position which still seems to be a struggle this cycle for the Wolverines is at quarterback.

Michigan had missed on a number of top targets at the position but had recently offered four-star quarterback Drew Allar out of Ohio and there seemed to be a realistic chance of Michigan adding him to their class.

Yet, quarterbacks continue to come off the board very quickly and on Monday, Allar decided to commit to Penn State over Michigan, Notre Dame and others.

It’s a disappointment because Allar was becoming one of the top options on the board. He was sort of a late riser, just getting bumped up to a four-star recruit recently — he was a three-star when U-M offered — but is 6-foot-5 and would have been a nice addition.

Instead, he started trending with crystal ball picks to Penn State over the weekend and then pulled the trigger on his commitment to the Nittany Lions.

With Allar off the board, things are starting to get really dicey at the quarterback spot and Michigan is really going to have to work to land a guy in 2022 at this point, of any quality at least.

Who are the best options?

Gavin Wimsatt is trending to Kentucky and doesn’t really seem to be on Michigan’s radar at this point. MJ Morris is another high-ranking prospect out of Georgia, but that also doesn’t seem like a realistic possibility at this point.

DeQuandre Smith was a three-star quarterback with some upside, but even he is trending with expert picks to South Carolina.

Now that doesn’t mean everything. Four-star quarterback Tanner Bailey started trending to Mississippi State before ending up at Oregon earlier this week.

So things can and will change.

One of the most logical targets left on the board is a three-star recruit, Tayven Jackson, out of Indiana. He’s a pro-style passer is ranked 17th at his position as well as 379th nationally according to the 247 sports composite rankings.

Michigan football offered in January and now would be the time to make a strong push. Auburn, UCLA, Illinois, and NC State offered just last week, which tells you his recruitment is heating up.

Being from the Midwest, Michigan should jump into the mix hard. Michigan did land five-star, J.J. McCarthy, in 2021 and that could hurt with some elite passers. But the Wolverines need another quality arm in this class and Jackson might be one of the best options still available.
