Michigan isn’t Ohio State, but at least its not the Spartans

Michigan State beat Michigan on the football field this year and there’s nothing any recruiting victory can do to change that. It can certainly help change the result in the future and the Wolverines scored a significant win over MSU Wednesday.

Michigan football doesn’t recruit as well as Ohio State and there’s no reason to pretend that it does. But if the way the staff closed this cycle is any indication, the Wolverines should have more success going forward.

At the very least, this cycle showed that Michigan State is still far behind the Wolverines on the recruiting trail. Michigan is looking at a top-10 class while the Spartans are ranked 43rd overall and 10th in the Big Ten. Michigan is second in the conference.

The Wolverines have 13 four-star recruits and 19 ranked in the top 600. Michigan State has just one four-star recruit, none ranked in the top 100 and only six in the top 600.

Of course, the Spartans have done a great job of getting more of out their talent and they did so last year in the first meeting between Tucker and Jim Harbaugh.

But those kinds of differences in recruiting are hard to overcome, especially if it happens year after year and following its win on the field, it seemed like a good time for Michigan State to score a major win.

Instead, it’s clear the Wolverines are still the major recruiting force in the state.
